Marx Beyond Marx: Lessons on the Grundrisse

Negri's work is notoriously difficult, both because of his dense style and, often, complex reasoning, and the wealth of topical references to the political events of the day. Having said this, 'Marx beyond Marx' is a good place to begin reading. Unlike the earlier polemic texts of the 1970s, published in English as 'Books for Burning', 'Marx beyond Marx' offers a single focused discussion of the 'Grundrisse', which Negri rightly identifies as Marx's most 'revolutionary' text.
These lectures were originally given in Paris at the invitation of Louis Althuser, and anyone who already knows Althuser's famous readings of Marx will become aware the Negri's text offers a subtle critique of Althuser's thought together with fresh insights that stress the Grundrisse's radical rethinking of Marx's earlier 'humanist' writings.
This is still a difficult text, but it offers many new perspectives on one of Marx's most important works, and will enable readers fresh to Negri's thought to understand why he became one of the most inluential European Marxist thinkers of recent times.
